“Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess. Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also. Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men’s bones, and of all uncleanness. Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity” (Matthew 23:25-28).
We live in a world obsessed with the outside. How many shows on television are based on making the outside look better? How many commercials use the “outside” and “looks” to sell a product? You know the answer!
Today’s words of Jesus help remind us we need to be concerned first with the “inside” of man — the spiritual part of man. The “inside” of a man is very important, for it is from there where behavior originates.
The “inside” of a man is formed by everything he allows into it. This list includes movies, television shows, books, magazines and music. Everything we watch and listen to sinks into our hearts and helps form the kind of person we are and will become.
By the way, these words of Jesus do not teach we can completely forget the outside. What He is teaching is to take care of the “inside” and the “outside” will take care of itself.
On this day, be extra sensitive to what you are allowing into your mind. Know that what goes in over time, will come out over time. Are you full of good and wholesome things, or dead mens’ bones?
Yes, Jesus really said that — and He meant it!
